West Berkshire Mencap’s Friendship Skills Group meets every Wednesday afternoon.
The friendship skills group helps develop skills for people with a learning disability, promoting social inclusion, building a better and independent future for our students.
To deliver a development programme, making a positive difference to the lives of people with a learning disability in a fun inclusive environment. To equip our students with the social and life skills, to be able to build lives for themselves and contribute within the community.
The Friendship skills group delivers a wide range of purpose built training and awareness programmes supported by highly trained and motivated staff and Volunteers. We have many guest speakers and trainers from different backgrounds and skills sets, helping in building a meaningful and professional development and training package.
Our aim is to help our students to become as independent as possible, helping them to connect to their local community and develop social networks. Many of our students have gone on to work for local companies.
Some of the courses and activities we run:- Friendship skills – safety in the community – Fun with computers – Healthy eating and life style – First aid for beginners – Developing self-esteem – Money and literacy skills – Wellbeing and personal care – Organising community activities – Drama – Political awareness & voting – Social evenings – CV writing – Presentation skills.
Volunteering at the Friendship Skills Group
We value our volunteers. Volunteers can contribute by helping to support the group on Wednesday afternoons or deliver a training and development slot that would benefit our students.
